Today's the anniversary of my sister's death. I was only three years old when I received news that I'm going to have a sister, and though young I was at that age, I still remember the excitement and anticipation of having a sister. But somehow, complications came and Dagna had to be born premature. Her lungs weren't developed enough that she had trouble breathing. She only lived for only two days, and during those days I couldn't see her at all.

The next memory I have is the funeral we had for her on that windy snowy morning. I put a flower, a red rose, on her little coffin. Years later I would come and visit the grave with Mom and Dad, and once I remember with Elita (my second sister, born in July 1986) sometime before I returned to Indonesia.

It's funny for me to resume my blogging this year with this kind of tone.

Hi!

Hello...
how are you doing? It's been another long while since I've updated my blog.

Well, for now I'm proud to say that I'm now a father to a healthy baby boy name Zachary Clement Chandra. He was born on October 19 2009, and shares the same birthday as her mother. Amazingly, the birthing process was normal (no c-section), and both Sanny and Zach were healthy. His length was 52cm and weighed 3,58kg when he was born. Now he's about 59cm and weigh nearly 6kg. Amazing!

Other news... how am I doing? Well, I am adjusting to being a father, and it is an amazing challenge. Many of my old habits and lifestyle had to change or removed as necessary.

I've also been accepted to Edith Cowan University for the Master of Professional Communication program, and for now my topmost priority is the visa application process so I can be in Perth (Western Australia) by the first week February next year.

Well, I guess that sums up my main issues for now.

Six weeks till our baby is born

Can you believe it?
I'm going to be a father?

My unborn son will be the first grandchild of my parents, as well the third grandchild in Sanny's side.

I wish I could say that this pregnancy is going great, but from time to time there are certain... challenges we both face as a couple.

Well, the due date is October 18 2009, but Sanny hopes he'll come out on the 19th which will be her birthday!

Ex-future-girlfriends

From the computer of Arvin Nathanael Chandra

One name comes to my mind, which is Meilisa Husein. Today is her 24th birthday, so happy birthday Mei, wherever you are!

Before anyone ask questions or comments... let me lift up a topic that is very un-Arvin... or perhaps it is.

Ex'es. Ex-girlfriends... or to be more proper, ex-future-girlfriends.

Mantan calon pacar.

In an early online chat with Miss Husein, I brought up a topic regarding ex-future-girlfriends. First, does the term make sense? Second, is it proper to use such terms?

From Mei's point of view, it makes real sense if seen from the guy's point of view. Say he used to have crush on the girl and tried to pursue a steady relationship with her, but after good consideration he decided to not pursue any further.

He and she never became a couple, but mentioning her as a ex-future-girlfriend is quite legal.

Speaking of which, there are a few names I'm gonna mention now which I might or might not mention again in my blog postings in the future.

First... hmmm...

What's the use? I'm married already, to a very wonderful woman, and I'm soon going to be a father (in 23 weeks that is!), and it's not always a good idea to live in the past.

It's just been awhile since I've thought and reflect upon it. Anyway, I'll probably mention my case again sometime in the near future.

Update: Okay, if you're wondering about the names I've mentioned in the labels below, it means I'm going to mention about them sometime in the future.

Another day... another... another...

From the laptop of Arvin Chandra

Another day, a lot of things left to do.

Sanny was hospitalized last week. Really, a start of a new week of lots and lots of activities. Just last Sunday I made two appointments for today: Meeting my former employer Ruddy Koesnadi, and meeting Mijan (of Bersaudara Motor) at the car shop. (Sigh)

Which is more important? Both of these are located at opposite ends of the city.
Pak Ruddy's home is at Palem Indah, Kepa Duri (which is near Tanjung Duren), while Mijan's garage is at Cempaka Putih.

My appointment with Pak Ruddy is at 7.30. I don't remember whether it's 7.30 AM or PM. My last message to him was '7.30 PM?' He hasn't replied it yet, and I know he's a respected businessman that has to sort to tons of text messages in his mobile.

My meeting with Mijan serves a simple purpose: Pay him my car repair bills, and take my car out for a test drive.

Now, while I'm in the verge of prioritizing my activities for today, I can't help thinking about what I need to do this week.

- There's a significantly important meeting this weekend (next Sunday to Monday) with my Inascifi core team.
- There's the Battlestar Galactica DVDs I need to pick up at Pak Ruddy's
- I would love to receive input from Pak Ruddy regarding my business plans and model.
- There are two downpayments in the form of an old laptop (my old one in fact) and a brand new laptop I've promised to WS and YD.
- My old laptop needs to be purged and re-installed with legal softwares.

Which brings me to this question. How do I prioritize those things above?

UPDATE:
Mr Ruddy sms-ed me, saying that he meant to meet at 7.30pm.
Also, I went to Yayasan Eunike to do contact work.
The car has a new cool looking paint.
I went to MOI, tried to find time to relax. Played Halo 3 in Blitz Gamesphere at Legendary mode. My skills hv definitely laxed since three years ago.
Oh, I came home to Kayu Putih exhausted. Rather than summing it up here, I'll just quote word-by-word what I've written to my Regent University admissions counselor.

Dear Elinor,

I have some shocking news for you.

1. First, I've discovered my wife to be pregnant some two weeks ago. Last night we went to a family clinic near our home and discovered the fetus is already 1.7cm long and is 7 weeks old. If this wasn't enough to bug my mind,

2. Second, I was denied entrance to my GRE test, because the test official saw my ID name didn't match my registration name. I registered ARVIN NATHANAEL CHANDRA for the test, and in the computers it appeared as ARVIN CHANDRA. Now, because of past government strange policy of not including family names in the birth certificates, all of my official documents, passports and ID cards lack my CHANDRA family name. Only my marriage certificate fully contains ARVIN NATHANAEL CHANDRA married to TAN SANNY ANITA.
When I conducted my TOEFL test last year (which I took in a different test center) this name problem wasn't a big issue for them and I was allowed to take the test and achieved a score of 108.
Yet, this GRE test center which is ran by Prometrics, didn't allow me to take it! The test official tried his best to be polite, and he sincerely believed I am Arvin Chandra, and I tried my best to withheld my anger and emotions, and in the end I realize I couldn't force him to allow me inside, since Prometrics have a strict policy regarding this identification. Apparently there was a bulletin that stated only National ID cards, driver's license and Passport (which all contains the testee's photos and signature) are considered valid proof. Credit card are considered secondary proof (as they usually contain no photos). But the bulletin explicitly state that 'Birth certificates' and other documents are NOT considered VALID.
Funny how that bulletin never reached my email inbox. Nevertheless, I'm going to the proper steps necessary to legally rectify this 'name problem' of mine.

3. Third, I'm building a company that aims to educate the Indonesian mass through science fiction through a series of magazines and events held by the Indonesian Science Fiction community. This is a dream I've had since 2001, and I tried to make this a business around 2007 but lacked the necessary skillset, network and experience. Now after being an entrepreneur this past 1 year, I'm taking myself as a Christian entrepreneur very seriously.

Because all these factors and coincidences, I trust GOD wants me to stay in Indonesia for the mean time. I'm not sure whether I'm going to take an online course or not (since I prefer a real face-to-face interaction with lecturers), but to say the least I will complete my application process, but not enter this year.

Hopefully,
-Arvin

The reply from Elinor Malendoski was very warm.

Dear Arvin,

Congratulations on the wonderful news about you and your wife being expectant parents! God does have His timing on all things!!

I would say that the problem at Prometrics was just another confirmation of God’s timing, though I know you were frustrated.

We hope that you will complete your academic application, in the event that you might want to study online!

I am able to defer your application until May of 2010 so we’ll just see how the Lord leads. OK?

Thank you so much for your full explanation and may God’s blessings rest upon you and your little family as you pursue your efforts in Christian entrepreneurship. (Regent offers a degree in that, you know!)

Love in Christ Jesus,

~E

Well... that sums up what I've been doing around since March.

Can't go this year

From the desktop of Arvin Nathanael Chandra

I wasn't allowed to take the GRE test because of identification issues. My wife and I prayed together and hoped to go to Australia, but the way things are going there hasn't been well. My mom reported the increased number of discrimination incidents toward Asians (and non-whites), as well the Australian work ethics that are far more laid back.

Now, going to the United States is like a dream. A dream of hope, opportunity and freedom. For awhile the dream seem so much like a... fantasy or wishful thinking. I haven't been there since I was six, and I really wanted to go home, to the place I first grew up as a boy.

My spouse had bad experiences trying to apply for visa to get there. The first was when her sister Esther got married and start settling in Baldwin Park. Sanny and her mom tried to go there, but Sanny's visa application was rejected. The second time was far worse, the application officer torn her paper in shreds right in front of her.

There was a proper good reasoning why her second application was denied: She hasn't finished her studies, and the Embassy was afraid she'd become an illegal immigrant there.

I myself never dreamed to go to USA just for vacation. To me, going 'home' is a very heart touching matter. I have to go there for good, or at least for a long duration. Studying there would bring me much joy.

So listed my options, and boy! How many options were there?
Studying game design somewhere near Indonesia (like Singapore or Australia). Eventually I applied for "Master of Games and Simulations Programming" in Edith Cowan University. Soon I was accepted for the February entrance semester. Ridiculously, the provisional letter (meaning, I have to provide additional materials before I receive a 'Letter of Acceptance') came roughly ten working days before the semester start. If that wasn't crazy enough, I decided to defer it to next semester. I emailed them three or four times (and receive no reply, except an out of office) and went as far to CALL THEM (overseas) on got BOUNCED two times.

I didn't feel certain applying to that place. The Master program, as good as it seem, was very technical and expensive and not what my heart was really into. I love gaming, I love simulations for training purposes, but spending two years of my life to learn the programming... I can do it for less expensive (and time consuming) means.

My true passion (in serving GOD and HIS KINGDOM) came through my experiences with movies, how they changed and improved my life. In fact, some of the best games I've played had pretty good FMVs (Full Motion Videos) and great acting. So perhaps it was time I reevaluated my strengths and values.

I begin to compared the times in the past and the present, how hard it is for a Christian guy to grow up a virgin. While many people tolerate our Christianity, they like to mock up our virginity. How come? I dare you to trace it to the conspiracy between Hollywood, Playboy and other media that appear harmless at first glance.

Look at the superhero Superman for example. Do you know in the 1990's Lois & Clark series, Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher had wonderful chemistry. Back then, Clark Kent was a really good guy, firm in his believe in justice and fidelity? The the new post 9/11 version, the Smallville series, was very different. He had to juggle his relationship status, occasionally make out with a few women and when he temporarily lose his powers, he made love and lose his virginity to Lana Lang. Yet after the years followed on, Lana and Clark drifted away, partly because of 'never being inside her' and also 'for keeping too many secrets' from her.

Even if Clark isn't destined to be together with Lana Lang, why did he has to make love? What kind of message is the producers sending out? Smallville lose many Christians viewers since season 5.

In my opinion, I'm criticizing Smallville's story line, and in the process I realize that I have some talent in criticizing the media from a Christian perspective.

So I've decided to study Master of Arts in Communication (specializing in Critical Studies in Cinema and Television).

I've prayed long about this decision, and I feel GOD's hand guiding me toward there.

My first public appearance

Hey, it's been awhile since I've mentioned about my personal life.

Well, for now I'd like to share a bit of my professional life.

I've just returned from Surabaya, giving my first lecture in a training workshop about Great Games for Effective Ministry.

It was really exciting, but I don't think I've given my best yet on it. Previously, I've just completed an internship at film production house in South Jakarta.

When am I going to study?
It depends, but it would be safe to say that 2009 would be the year Sanny and I will start studying for our master's degree.

Now honestly, here's a question I have for all you people.

Do you think a blog is an appropriate place to share about our personal life and details?

Please, give me some decent answers.

I'm getting married!

From the desktop of Nathanael Fraix

I'm getting married in six days.

Can you believe it?

I wish I could write something more profound than simply this.

What's been in my heart lately...

From the desktop of Nathanael Fraix

Certain things that has been in my heart lately:
1. My wedding preparation
2. My cousins Ernst and Bertram and their respective girlfriends
3. Sanny's health
4. My current... er.., job, the competency mapping project for that certain company in Central Java.
5. My application to Biola University.

I've also been thinking about my personal goals in life, one of which I'm trying to put my own passion, hobbies and skills in line with God's will in my life.

I admit that I'm far from satisfied with my life, with my present state. I'm not saying that I'm unhappy. I just wished I could use my time more efficiently, or to bring more glory to God and the Kingdom. Despite what I've learned from my parents and school, and recently from my beautiful relationship with Sanny, I still feel under-equipped to be an ambassador of the Kingdom.

I often question myself: How can I, in my all of my flaws and hindrance, can be a person who can bring that message of hope, peace and reconciliation to this darken world... whose people are really thirsting for such messages?
In a cognitive level I can think that the Holy Spirit will guide me and equip me along the way, but in a deeper affective level... part of me still find it incapable of doing the task.

Well... here am I, just sharing a bit of what's been going on within me.

Eighteen Days To Go

From the desktop of Nathanael Fraix

Okay.

I'm blogging. again. Sigh.

Trying to pursue, something different.
Here's the scoop: I've been going on for ten days without films and games. Sort of.
Sanny thought it'll make a nice Valentine gift if I can pend a month of refraining myself from those entertainment in order to focus on the more important things, like reflecting on God's grace, talking about our relationship's future and most important of all: cleaning up my bedroom.

Well, last Tuesday (Feb 19) the bedroom was eventually... changed from the rather uninhabitable condition to a more habitable environment.

So here I've gone... days not watching and films, or DVDs, or playing any games. And just when that new Knight Rider TV movie came out last week. Nope... I just couldn't watch any.

But last Saturday night while I was at Sanny's place, Sanny turned on the TV and there was Ben Stiller in Night at the Museum. It was a fun movie, which both of us haven't watched. So we ended up 'relaxing' the rules a little bit. That film was my the only one I watched during this one month period.

This... fasting, if you could call it, will last until March 14, 2008.

Eighteen more days to go.
-Arvin

Something to take out of my chest...

Or my thoughts...

Hmmm... let's say.

You've been working at this company, which has been around for more than a decade. IT has a discerned reputation of service excellence, and there you are...

The new guy, who's been around for quite awhile, but haven't handled any project.

Till one day, the time arrived for the project to start. Then it turned out to not be a simple project. It was somewhat unique, advanced, and certainly way beyond what the new guy has done before.

After a couple months of slow progress, the pace began to increase, but unfortunately the progress wasn't fitting to his superior's expectations.

Well... in one side, the new guy didn't receive any proper guidance from his superiors... they expected him to learn by himself and if necessary, from his peers. Easier said than done, if the environment was supportive. But then again, the guy was working in a new division separated from what his peers were doing.

T'ant pis (French for: Too bad; So much the worse).

Fortunately, the new guy is later partnered with a more experience worker who recently moved into the company. After strong disappointment from the management above, it was decided that the experienced worker would be in charge handling the new project while the new guy would simply assist him.

Is there any sense where this story is heading?

Eight months since I've started in MRI

It's been 8 months since I've started my new job in MRI. It's really been quite a challenge, learning to conform to new standards and expectations, as well being held accountable for a few projects that are rather... significant.

There's still a nagging question within me, about why my boss would position me in job position that I'm really unused to. Business development, research & development.

Good thing to realize, over this past 8 months I've learned quite a lot about leading a professional life, and living toward corporate standards.

Business here has began to increase in pace, and I've been put in charge of two projects. One is a repeat study of a similar research done last year, and the other is a new research toward hospitals. I can't post many details, but I can at least say this is probably the first time this sort of research has been conducted in Indonesia.

People have been asking me: 'Do you enjoy your new job?'

My answers would be between 'I'm adapting for this job' or 'well, it's been quite a struggle for me'.

There were some moments when I felt direction-less, feel that my boss isn't guiding me or mentoring me well enough. Luckily this last two months I've been partnered with a senior worker, who's been a really great help for me. But still, I can't truthfully say that doing this is my true passion...

Alright, I think I've wrote too much.

Until next posting...

Two months since I've been in MRI

From the desktop of Nathanael Fraix

It's nearly the end of my probation in MRI. For this time being.

Hmm... I've cancelled my internship with CampHA because of personal (and perhaps professional) reasons, but the bottom line is that I'm back to Jakarta.

So far I'm still unemployed, but I've been doing some bits of things... helping Sanny with her thesis, driving her around here and there. I'm also going to assist my dear friend Melly for an upcoming church retreat somewhere around Surabaya.

Well... here I am, being 25 years old, and still...

To be honest with myself, I've lost a certain sense of direction and purpose. For these past few years I've felt that I have this interest and gift in understanding computer & video games, as well media-related issues. For awhile I thought I would be doing something related to them. I still want to have a job related to something that I like, unlike my last stint.

I'm hoping to apply for job more related to my interests.

Current affairs - April 12 2006

From the Laptop of Fraix

OKAY... three months of no news from me isn't quite what I expected.

Here's a summary:
- I've already graduated, to be precise my graduation ceremony was on March 11 2006, exactly 40 years since Supersemar (a historical event that is related to Suharto's reign in Indonesia).

- I've grown closer with Stephanie Elviana Kristanto, a junior of mine from Psikologi Atma Jaya. For the past two years I've somehow became her confidante, a role I've been honor to be selected. We sat together during our graduation ceremony.

- I purchased the domain name inascifi.com and have registered my Yahoo!ID with the email associated to said account. The future of Ina_sci-fi and inascifi.com is still open to discussion, but I did compose a certain introduction letter some time ago.

- A week before I departed for Singapore (March 23), I held a farewell party at Hartz Chicken Mal Taman Anggrek. It was great time spent together with my friends and loved ones. Among them were Rossy, Benedict Sulaiman, Yopi Y. Bachrie, Hans Suryawan, Stephanie E. Kristanto, Nana Namaskara and her boyfriend Herman, David Budy Parlan, Bertram (my cousin) and his girlfriend Rossa, Sanny and Willy. I was so happy that so many could attend our lunch together. It was a great chance for my friends to meet each other, and some of the interactions were really humorous.

- The day before I left (March 30), I had another farewell party for my relatives and closest friends. I asked for a Bible reading from Dad, and he read me from the Book of Joshua chapter 1. There were also several testimonials from Bertram, Melly 'Kiplik' Istanto, and Jeriel Charis. There testimonials about me was so touching, and I never really thought that Bertram would point out my sincerity and genuine care I have for others. Jeriel also brought up our old past regarding Erin, and I'm so glad that we could laugh together about it. It's a funny thing to note, that it was also on a Sunday of March 18 2000, did Jeriel officially asked Erin Mutiara Naland to be his girlfriend. They began their courtship on April 1 2000 (yep, on April Fool's Day). Sanny and I hope that their six year courtship isn't just a six year old prank. Anyway, it was the blessings from my friends and parents that helped strengthen my resolve to move and learn in Singapore.

- I'm in Singapore (refer to previous post) right now.

- Hmmm, last week (April 5) for the first time in my 18 years of friendship with Erin, I went out with her... two of us together, walking around in Plaza Singapura chatting and doing a bit catching up. She was surely a sight for sore eyes. But to top things up, I also met my old friend Lyla Charmaine Sulaiman. Imagine this: it's been nearly seven years since we graduated from Smuk3, and we haven't met since. In fact, Lyla herself couldn't remember when was the last time we met, although I do try to maintain contact with her through email and the occasionally phone call (and more recently, chatting online through MSN Messenger service).

- It's getting late, and I gotta wake up early tomorrow. Well... this is just a brief sum of my current affairs.

Ark Road

From the Laptop of Fraix

Oh dear... it's been a long while since I've written anything on my blog. Might as well sync this with my other blog as well my private journal.

Alright, where should I start.

Hmm... I'm in Singapore right now.
Not just visiting, but more like... looking for a job. Working on an internship. At the time being, I'm helping around a place called MOE Jalan Bahtera Adventure Centre. My job title would be Trainee/Assistant for the Adventure Centre Staff Manager, namely a Singaporean female name Jody Tan. I don't know how old Jody is, but she about a few or several years older than me.

Jody is practically my boss, and I am to assist her in my best capabilities to run this centre, or at least make things run smoother. Story is, this centre belongs to the Singaporean Ministry of Education. Recently, this place was outsourced to a consortium of CampHA (where I'm currently interned) with ISS Facility. Since we've came over, the place has been a real mess. Lots of defective equipment and problem areas around the place, and I've been compiling a report of those problems these past one week.

Oh yeah... I can't say too much as my pass here is only for Social Visit for 30 days, which expires this April 19th.

Luckily, this Friday I'll be going to Batam and fly home to Jakarta and spend a couple of days back home. I miss Indonesia pretty much. I miss Sanny so much.

Sanny Anita Tan... my beloved darling, my future wife (if GOD permits)... what will I be without her?

I love her so much.

Back from Jogja!

Just got back from Jogjakarta. Physically tired, but my mind's still active after the last few days. Interesting, visiting a province I've heard about a lot but haven't been to for thirteen years. The city has grown larger, and so number of vehicles increased. Met a lot of new people, amongst them are Metta (Pak Edi Amigo's daughter), Mia (his niece) and Adeste (Mia's older sister). Turns out that Metta's school counselor at Binus high is Yosehan, an alumni from my faculty who is one year my senior. I remember him as a bright fellow, pretty sincere and modest. His height is rather short too.
Mia, a student at Regina Pacis - Jakarta is in her senior year and is making plans for her choice of study. She has her sights in psychology at Atma Jaya. I gave her some pointers about that field.
Yesterday, I met Tyas Nusantara, the daughter of Bondan Nusantara. A petite girl who's four years my junior, she's studying English Literature at Satdap, Jogjakarta. Her father is one of the most distingushed Javanese art expert and a world renown Ketoprak writer.

Today is my little brother's birthday. He's turning twelve today, and we planned a birthday party for him this afternoon. But Mom's not here with us, because Oma Lies has fallen ill during her trip to Semarang. Yesterday Mom left for Semarang from Klaten to take care of her. Our prayers are with Oma, that she would recover from whatever illness have fallen upon her. Jeddie's a little sad being without Mom.

The night is no getting younger, and I need to rest. I'm also going to shutdown this desktop too.

G'nite

-0116 hours

Graduated at last!

[originally written on Wednesday, December 21 2005 - 0053 hours]

Kepada kawan-
kawan yang
dikasihi, terima
kasih segala
dukungan dan doa.
Saya telah
dinyatakan telah
lulus ujian skripsi.
Sekarang tinggal membuat revisi.
Sender:
Arvin N. Much longer since I've last met her. For years I considered her as a friend. A confidant, someone I could chat with, share news and interests in music. Then one day, everything changed. I don't know if it was becuase of her busy life, her starting carreer, or because she simply had a boyfriend.

On the last day of March, I invited her to come a youth club meeting. Not only she declined my invitation, she firmly requested that I should never, ever contact her again no matter the circumstances. No matter the circumstances? I was surprised, and an hour later she called me again, just to make her point clear. The particular reason is that I use to like her (a fact), and now she has a boyfriend, and I already have a girlfriend, and for some reason she is very much disturbed by me.

If she was disturbed by me since the beginning of our friendship, or in the course of it, why did she never indicated it before?

Last November was her birthday, and I sent her a message. It was a very simple message, sent on November 22:

I remember your birthday was this Monday, so I
just want to give you a happy 24th birthday!

Regards

I was hoping to at least mend some of our friendship. Instead, I receieved a rather harsh message:

hey,did I called you before not to disturb
or contact me anymore??why didn't
understand?r u nuts?eh,g dah bilang g
nga suka lo CONTACT GUE!g dah
ngomong baik2 waktu itu,jgn smpe g
ngomong keras.I CAN't BE BOTHER!

PS;jgn sok inggris

For those who don't understand Indonesia, I won't spare the effort to translate the meaning.

I just feel that I've really lost her as a friend.

It's been a while, but I'm back!

It's been a long road, getting from there to here
it's been a long time, but my time is finally here
and I can see my dreams come alive at night
I will touch the sky - "Faith of the Heart" by Dianne Warren

Finally, one chapter of my life is about to close. Rumah Sakit Mitra Gading that is. He's sick, and he's been exhausted from his workload and pressure from certain people. Anyway, he is weary and also deeply longing to be with Mom again.

That's why I've proposed several people to gather funds for him to go to Perth and be with Mom and Jeddie, even if for a short while.

Kirana has been a wonderful companion. Accompanying Dad today and went with him to the hospital too. I also went with him, heard the doctor's diagnosis but I also had to go to the train station and pick up Elita.
Well, on the way to there I felt very fatigued... car sicked probably so I got off and went home instead.

Later on when she got home I asked Lita if she wants to visit Dad in the hospital. She was too tired or something, but instead she borrowed my car and went somewhere.

Anyway, I went back to the hospital stopping by at a Pizza parlor to buy some pizza for me and Kirana. I bought one regular size and one large size (which was discounted every Mondays). On a red light stop, I saw some kids and somehow felt moved to give on of the pizzas to them. They were very grateful. Repeatingly saying, "Terima kasih, om!" to me. It was a highpoint of the whole day.

I don't know why Lita didn't want to visit Dad today. I know she has an interview with someone tomorrow, and I guess she just need to refresh. I still feel... treated unfairly.
Especially when I asked her where she was going.

"Why should you care?" she asked, "I never asked you where you're going..."
"I'm your brother," I replied.
She was so unhappy hearing me nagging her for that.

Anyway, end entry.

Something terribly happen in Indonesia

Something terribly happen in Indonesia. Around seven p.m., central Indonesian time, three bombs exploded in Bali, not far from the 2002 blast area. Whoever attacked really did a good job in spreading terror to the hearts of Indonesians.

But being terrorized isn’t exactly how I feel. I’m more upset... really angry towards all the corruption and evil that’s been roaming this Land. How often I cry out the words, “How long, O Lord, how much longer must we witness this injustice and evil.”

What saddens me the most is knowing that how widespread is this corruption and injustice in Indonesia. What saddens me more is feeling helpless about it... witnessing my country and the people I care about being destroyed from within.

I just want to see some vindication over all of this. Other times the illusion is somewhat shattered by the harsh reality of life, but yet we try to choose what we think is right.

No matter how we choose, our choices would always bring consequences. But if we decide to take the wrong choice, a choice that isn't particularly wise or exactly brilliant, but nevertheless the choice we wish.

Do we have the right to take that choice?

Why?

So we can learn from our mistakes perhaps?

Easier thought than done, but parenting doesn't come any easier these days.
Lately I've been trying to put myself inside my dad's shoes (figuratively) and I've been watching how my sister (who's back from Australia for a 8 week vacation) been doing things that I'm not so... comfortable with.

Hanging around with the bunch I'm not particularly fond of, trying to have her way or no way at all... my sister's actions been causing a great deal of distress to my Dad which affected his health.

Don't know what details I can divulge, but I'm glad that people been showing up and giving attention and care to my dad while my sister been doing other things and ironically feels jealous towards them. Well, not them, but more particularly one or two individuals.

I have a friend (who I may have mentioned in this blog before) who I consider a very close friend and much like a sister. My dad considers her as a daughter, and she is very appreciative of the warmth and attention my family been providing to her. Can't help considering as a sister, although the fact is my biological sister is somewhat jealous of her.

Ironically, sometime ago my dad needed help to go to the hospital. He asked Lita to drive him there but she declined, stating she was tired (having a headache) and needed rest. My dad understand and let her so. Later on Kirana (my friend's name) drove Dad to the hospital while Lita went to the mall with her friends. I don't have the exact chronological order of the things, but just say that did made Lita jealous of Kirana, while my Dad was really upset of Lita. If Lita was tired, why did she go to the mall.

Things are somewhat complicated.

But back to the topic of choices.

How do we go through with our lives watching the people we love occasionally make apparently wrong choice?

From the desktop of Nathanael Fraix

Okay... it's been past three weeks, but I'll just say it anyway.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

I've gotten a bit lazy in my bloggings, but worry not... I'll post something every once in a while.

Alright...

the next order of things:

I haven't finish my final project /slash/ thesis on my descriptive study upon gamers. Have been getting problems in choosing the right theories for it, but I intend to finish it around the month of March. I've been studying in my university for eleven semesters, and been putting two semester on this final project. I can't stay here much longer... I'm 23 and it's about time I move on to my next phase of life.

And what phase would that be?
Hmm... getting a job, getting married and starting a family. Something like that. Actually, I'm more concerning in continuing my studies abroad... visit the land I haven't touch for 18 years.

Well... speaking of works, I proudly inform you that my tasks and responsibilities in Young Life Indonesia has begun to increase. Right now, I'm in charge of the bi-monthly bulletins, webpage and P3-21 network.

Will tell more later.

Excerpts... Dec 30 2004

Excerpt from my journal

Tuesday, December 30, 2004 0324 hours

CHRISTMAS!

Christmas came and the spirit is always with us.

Sanny and I had our best Christmas together. She planned a Christmas dinners since weeks ago and I came, helped her cook and prepare the ingredients. Had a close encounter with a dead squid. Never thought their ink tubes feels like harden plastic.
We ate macaroni scotel (darn my spelling), tom yam koong (a sour taste Thai soup), a tofu meal (cooked by Niko) and on top of it a juice slash moose for dessert. It was great.
Before we dine together (there’s this little round table that functions as a dining table, but it’s so small and we just put our meal and dishes there) Juniko asked the family to share their opinions and hopes about each other.

Niko thanks everyone for the trust they’ve placed on her, for her decision to give support more on the financial aspects as well for the closeness she has with Sanny over this past year. She also urges Pak Delon to be more talkative and open to the rest of the family, and to keep serving God as he has in the choir at Pernias.

Willy is grateful for the experience he has as a computer lab assistant at Binus and for the sickness and health that followed, also for his Dad’s sacrifice in cycling him to Binus every morning.

Sanny thanked everyone and promised to finish her studies as soon as possible.

Papa (Mr. Delon) was very peculiar that evening. When each of their children spoke, he kept his head lowered and gave a kind of testimony. I don’t know why he referred himself as Oom, but he told a story about a painting (his painting I guess) and how his life was like it. About its restoration, and how he felt his life being restored to God and how he’s grateful for every oportunity God has presented to him. Afterwards he ended his ‘prayer’ in the Catholic way.

I spend the night at Sanny’s house on Christmas eve.

The day after (which is Christmas) we went to my home, enjoyed the gathering with our friends from YES.
Dad also gave a sermon at Kayu Putih that evening.
The evening we celebrated Christy 14th birthday. Man, I still remember the day he was born many years ago.

The night.. late night Sanny and I spent time with Bertram, Vani and Ernst. We sang along some songs, made a lot of good laughs, and I entertain them with a good selection of songs. Sanny and I also sang For Always that time.

It was raining hard that night and I drove Sanny home on the Kuda. Bang Juang and Elita accompanied me.

I enjoyed last Sunday evening with Sanny and Willy. Going to the wedding of Sanny’s cousin. Her name is Marya and she’s a couple of years older than me. I also get to meet many of Sanny’s aunts and cousins. There was Davina, Martin, Johan (Han Han), Michael and Silvi who I’ve met before. I also encounter Andri (some sort of busy guy who didn’t want to be photographed with the family and newlyweds), Ryan (Davina’s little brother who weighs 96kg) and Maya and Monica (Maya’s little sister) and Leo (Aunt Lily’s son who's studying at SMP Taruna Bakti, Bandung)

Well, the wedding reception was nice and Sanny and I won a prize. It’s a teapot/mug that we gave to Leo.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fraix.blogspot.com/2005/01/excerpts-dec-30-2004.html' title='Excerpts... There were a lot of facets in this sub-culture.

During my research seminar (a class that prepares us for our thesis) I finalized my grade on a research titled 'Penelitian tentang Need for Achievement pada Professional Gamers'. A Eenglish translation of that title would 'A Research on The Need for Achievemens of Professional Gamers'. I chose that title because I was running out of time and I had to complete the pre-thesis paper or else I won't start my thesis the next semester.
My pre-thesis counselor namely Eric Mulyadi said, "you can focus on the motivational aspects of the gamers," and later "Vin, concentrate on graduating from the seminar first..."

Afterwards, my pre-thesis title was inadequate for my final thesis. Why? Because in my understanding and perception, there is no professional gamers here in Indonesia.
Why? Because the only gamers who compete professionally here, do not make a living out of it. Yes they do play serious, and yes they play in the cyber Olympics, but they don't compete in games as a I primary source of income.

I had to find something else!

What I found, took me 11 months of searching, peer-to-peer counseling, guidance and the occassional luck.

I searched from various sources: game forums, game academics, online news (yes, yes,yes.. most of them are found in the World Wide Web), magazines and the occasional conversations with people.

And you know my vision was during the whole study? I want to make a research upon computer/video gaming from a psychological and social perspective, that is objective and not condemning. Why did I mention the word condemning? Because in my literary search through two Indonesian universities, three of them used a title that was rather judgmental.
'A study on the relationship of hostile attribution bias and violent content games';
'A Study about the Addiction of Ragnarok Online Players'
'A research on the hostile aggresivity of violent video gamers'

Just by reading the title one can get the idea that, "Oh my, games can be dangerous."

I didn't want to judge games as being bad or dangerous. I've played many kinds of games and I consider many of them being immersive and thought provoking. Some games like Civilization and Wing Commander sparked my interests toward social sciences. And it was also Wing Commander that taught me lessons about sacrifice, patriotism and love. Those two games were also violent, but I learned from them.

So, where did my attitude towards games lead me to?

I decided to investigate the motivational aspects of people playing games.

My working research title is: Penelitian tentang Hubungan Motivasi Bermain Games dengan Perilaku Bermain Games.

The English translation would be: a study on the relationship of the motivations of playing games with the gaming behavior.
Later

Game studies... pt 001

From the desktop of Arvin Nathanael Chandra

In my first post in this humble blogspot of mine, I mentioned my study regarding computer games.

For those who don't know my current field of study is Psychology, which is basically the study of human (and animal) behavior. I'm in my final year (read: I only need to finish this thesis so I can graduate) and I've seen many of my friends who were once fellow students are now beginning to experience work... a full time job, the harsh and matter-of-fact realities of life.

It is funny that many people... significant people in my life has told me about how much potential I actually have. I know that. But I think it's a sad truth to say that my academic records doesn't seem to reflect so. I'm not sure I could be categorized as underachievers (read Halim, 2004) but I can state I'm not too proud of what I've been achieving these past 16 years of my life.

I've never achieved a high rank, nor a straight A's in my report card... and I thought university life would be better. So far I've been scoring above average which isn't much to say for a guy with a GPA of 2.56.

Although my performance isn't a huge success, I wanted to give my best for my final work... my coup de grace.

A study regarding computer (and video) games from a psychological standpoint that can be significantly useful for my country Indonesia.

Here's an issue:
Electronic games have been a rather new form of art and entertainment. When I say new I say it has been around for about three decades and the form haven't been firmly established compared to other media like books and films.

Now, the thing is a lot people been playing games. To some their lives revolves around these game playing. Well, perhaps the word revolves is a word too strong, but I can say that many kids, teenagers and adults have been willing to spend a lot of time (and money) to seek entertainment from this medium.

The market has made a huge profit numbering to billions of dollars around the world.

One of the problem regarding the young age of game studies and media is, 'how do we make out of this?'

huh... I'm a bit tired tonight so I'll continue this some other time.

Sidetracked...

I went to a bible study a few hours ago which was been led by Dad.It was about keteraturan... or the translation would be 'order' or being organized, tidied. Over the years I've got to know her, she unrealizingly brought quite an impact to my life.

Tuesday, October 19 2004: My girlfriend's 22nd birthday! It was quite a day for both of us. A memory I will always remember, not just because of the significance of the date, but also because of the consequences of my actions and the experience I learned through it. Well, should I divulge futher details? Refer to file 'Tanya Nysan'!
Thursday, October 21 2004: Although Sanny's birthday were two days before, I gave her my present today. It's a book about fruits. She's surprised to received, but she likes anyway. Actually, she wished I'd give her a set of puzzles. Perhaps next time.

Saturday, October 23 2004: Picked up my Dad at the airport. He's been back from Singapore, and he brought lot of experiences and photos from his recent travels.

Monday, October 25 2004: It's been the certain pretty girl's 18th birthday. Well, she happen to be studying the same university as Sanny so I took the opportunity to come by at UI and visit the pretty girl's faculty. We manage to find her (well, actually Sanny spotted her first) and I gave her a gift. A CD album titled 'Seasons' Stevan Pasero. note of importance: the food at the Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Indonesia still have much to desire tidwit note: the first time I've noticed that Kristina Heryawati wear braces.

Well, basically that's a rundown of what been happening.
Oh yeah, I recently came across a nice website that had several links to some good game music. It's at http://soundtracks.mixnmojo.com

-Arvin N. What a Friday.
Wanna know what I've been doing?
<hd1>

Guitar lessons with Rainer Wildt at his house. The lessons started a bit late becuase Pak Rainer asked me to look into his daughter's computer. Apparently he tried to install some racing games but couldn't execute a few of them. Well, I think I manage to make a few games playable without messing Reni's desktop. Riddle me this: Why is a guitar expert asking a psychology student to tweak his daughter's desktop?</hd1>

Teaching guitar as an extracurriculer activities for 10-12 year olds . I'm teaching at SDK VI (which is pretty near my home) from 12.30 - 1.30pm. I get paid for Rp.75,000 for an hour per week. I kindda enjoy the activity, although teaching kids that age in suc a limited time and space makes me sigh.
I have a pupil name Devina Purba, a sixth grader. Her guitar skills are much better than the rest of her class, thanks to her taking guitar lessons at Yamaha Gatot Soebroto. Funny thing, her teacher, Arthur Sahelangi, is the same teacher I studied with before I moved to Pak Rainer.
Note: So I become a guitar pupil in the morning and a guitar teacher in the afternoon.

I'm now taking a computer course on web design at Computrain (www.computrain.edu). It's the first time outside school I took a computer course. During my highschool days I learned DOS, Lotus 1-2-3, dBase and QBasic. Nowadays those programs are hardly used, but my skills in DOS are the ones that thrusted me to know computer as much as I do now. You know what? I actually miss the good ole' DOS days. C:> anyone?
Note: Two of my old schoolmates are working at Computrain. Frans Gomedi is a full timer, while Erwin K. is a part-timer.

Oh yeah, I should mention that I called Putri today. It's been quite a while since I've last chatted with her and I can say that today's chat was quite enjoyable. Interesting.

My story about love...

From the desktop of Nathanael Fraix

From time to time there lot of things in life that are worth mentioning. On this occasion I just want to mention a bit about my past. More specifically, my past feelings with members of the opposite sex. People would say that I ain't much of a shy person, and frankly I do enjoy the company of beautiful women.

I've fallen in love several times, and been rejected in nearly all occasions. It's been six years since I've first confessed my feelings toward a girl, and since then my love life been like a coaster ride.

Honestly, I wouldn't know what I'd be had I not met, knew and fell in love with Sanny Anita. She's been a real blessing in my life, helping me discover more about my strengths and weaknesses, as well bringing me closer to God. It is the knowing that we both love God more than we love each other has been the foundation of our relationship.

I'll explain more later.

Sleeping over my car

From the desktop of Nathanael Fraix

Whew!

It's been quite a week today.
In my last blog I mentioned that my cousin Ernst was having a birthday. We celebrated it last night at steakhouse in Gading (namely Mel's steak).

But let me give you a rundown of what happen last Wednesday night:
Sanny asked me to drive her to a certain hospital in Jatinegara (namely R.S. Mitra Internasional a.k. R.S. Mitra Keluarga) where she wants to check up with a certain doctor (namely dr. Teddy). The purpose of the check up is for verification purposes only. I don't know why she had to go the that doctor at Mitra hospital is practically the other side of the city from her home (which is at Kota) aside the fact that people say he's good and he knows his stuff. Anyway Sanny got the appointment number 14, and he practices from 6 till 9pm.

We arrived at the hospital on 7, and I went through the hospital's parking lot twice to find no parking space so I decided to exit, pay my parking fee (Rp.1500) and search for a vacant space nearby the hospital. My choice of parking space was the lot in front of a Christian bookstore name Kalam Hidup. It's just next to Dandy bakery and Bakmi Keriting restaurant where my aunt frequents before. Settling and turning off the car, I left my blue Mitsubishi Kuda Grandia locked and settled and head towards the hospital hoping that the parking attendant won't be upset by me.

There was the routine registration purposes/looking for the doctor/where's the doctor stuff, and at 7.30 we waited and waited in the waiting room (it's about to get boring from here) and noticed there more guests waiting for the same dr. Teddy. Fortunately on of the room's TV sets was showing a satellite channel of HBO, which was showing a cool action movie starring Russell Crowe (with his handsome charming look) and Denzel Washington (with a rugged hardened look). It was a nice movie with good performances from Crowe and it ended around 8.55pm. By then the doctor still hadn't appeared we were beginning to get hungry.

"Let's find some food," I said to Sanny.

We walked back to my car and hoping to find the Bakmi Keriting still open. It wasn't. Neither was Kalam Hidup store. They closed on 8. Worst of all, the owner of Kalam Hidup usually chain his fences to prevent any vehicle getting in or out with my vehicle being one of it.
There were two cars still behind the store's inner gates, and the owner was apparently gone. The locals told me that the owner is going out for a while, and will soon be gone. They expected him to return by nine or ten pm.
I waited... and waited.

Even Sanny accompanied me and waited till it was midnight.

It was very... toughening experience. By the time it was midnight I felt that I had to take Sanny home, but I also couldn't leave my car (which technically was not my car but my dad's office's) so I made her promise to go home on a cab by 1 am. When it was 1 am she still waited with me and we spent the night talking a lot and fighting local mosquitoes.

We waited longer and longer till the sun rose up around 5.30am, and one of store workers carrying the keys arrived and let us out by 7am.

We got back to my home very tired and spent. Try sleeping in your own car with lots of mosquitoes running around.

But I never felt sure or grateful knowing that Sanny really accompanied me through that night, and didn’t complain much about.

I know she probably was a bit guilty, knowing that me driving her to the hospital led me to that... but it was a real experience that night of September 29 2004.

Cousin's birthday

From the desktop of Nathanael Fraix

It's thirty minutes from my cousin's birthday.

His name is Ernst Adhikara Chandra, and I've known him for the last sixteen years of my life... since the first day I've come back to Indonesia.

I'll get to this later.

For now...

My Mid Term TESTS are done!

Well, actually it was a single test.

Clinical psychology. I'd like to welcome you all to my first blogspot ever.

Usually people would write about anything in these bloggers. I myself don't know why I'm doing this now.

Well, I'd probably mention a few things going on around me.

Hmm... my girlfriend, Sanny Anita just cut her hair short. Very short. She looks like the second time I met her (which is more significant than our first encounter).

And I've been doing some research at my faculty's library, trying to find some clues or research regarding computer gaming in Indonesia. It turns out that about three or four of my colleagues at Fakultas Psikologi Atma Jaya wrote their thesis on gaming.
